Post 6: Sexism Shown in a Fiction Character that I Love.

Helga G. Pataki was the character that I loved the most when I was a girl. Helga was a character in the Nickelodeon series "Hey Arnold." What I liked most about this character was his appearance, which went in a way against the canons that are imposed on girls since we are born. Although Helga wore pink, it was her attitudes that determined her. For example, she always played baseball with the children of the series, was empowered and always got the word out. she lived her sensitivity in a private way.

However, this character was compared all the time with his sister, Olga, who was just the opposite of Helga. Olga was exaggeratedly sweet, sensitive and had excellent grades. I think there lies sexism, in the character of Olga. The series does it from a critical point of view, since despite the fact that the parents of these sisters felt a preference to Olga, Helga never abandoned her way of being.

  1. I think in the series they exaggerate the attitudes of Helga and Olga, each taking the positions of what is socially considered as masculinity (Helga is strong, rude) and femininity (Olga is passive, orderly), etc. Sexism sucks anyway.

  2. I totally agree with you. Helga represents the banned pose of woman by the society. On the other hand, her sister represent the expected pose by the society.

  3. I had never seen the sexism present in the character of Olga, it is very shocking to realize that in many of the characters in the series there was some sexist manifestation.

POST 3: My favourite piece of technology

The portable music players have made my days much more entertaining. Usually people use their cell phones to listen to their favorite songs. However, I prefer a device that is exclusive to listen to music. When I was 11 years old, my mom gave me a Sony Walkman Mp3 Player, that had a capacity for approximately 30 songs, very little capacity for these days. But I didn’t care, I was happy with those 256 MB. Over time the players increased their capacity and I could listen to the complete discs that I liked the most.  Today I don't have to download music from internet as before, I only need to pay a monthly subscription to an application that allows me a broad musical catalog. For this I bought an iPod Touch that is like a cell phone but doesn’t receive calls. It’s wonderful! No message or call interrupts my music.

Post 7: My Indignation

With regard to all this setback that is occurring due to the change in the educational program of the education of the middle school students in Chile, there is another thing that unites me in the same or worse way and is the cost of books. In general, the access to culture in Chile is precarious and is extremely worrisome. Since I was little I liked reading, but the price of books is too high. While there are alternatives, such as libraries, it’s not enough. In addition, there is no incentive to read, that's why studies always show that a very small percentage of Chileans hardly understand what they read. There are very few instances in the year with activities dedicated to reading, such as FILSA (International Book Fair of Santiago) that has been done for more than 30 years. However, it’s unusual that at the most important book fair in Santiago, every year people have to pay for their income. For them it’s not enough to sell expensive books, but they also add an extra co...

Post 10 - Evaluation of Blog Experience

I had never had the experience of writing in a blog, and the truth is that I liked it a lot, since the subjects were quite interesting and mostly entertaining. However, there were times when I forgot to write them, I'm sorry about that.  I acquired more skills in writing in another language, usually my relationship with the inglish language is through listening to songs and there I had the opportunity to explore another field, that of writing.  I believe that the way the blog is thinking is correct, the issues are in accordance with our interests and what is happening today in society, so they are relevant. I wouldn’t change anything in this format, I think it helps a lot to improve our english language skills.  I would like perhaps in the future to write about the issues that I am working with my colleagues. For example, we are doing a report about mental health in university students and it’s an issue that concerns us all, since, first of all we are unive...
